The Great day... Teachers' Day

My mobile phone beeped at 12 midnight on September 5th & I wondered who on earth would remember me at this hour & more over, its neither my Birthday or anniversary. The SMS read 'Happy Teachers' Day'.... a msg sent by my sister in Bangalore, India. How could I, of all ever forget this wonderful day?

The same morning, I wished my colleagues all those from India. Call it a surprise or coincidence none remembered this "TEACHERS' DAY". This day was so wonderful day during school days.

My boarding school was unique where we celebrated all events & all feasts of India with great zeal. Similarly, on Teachers' day, all the Teachers & Principal of the school partied away from campus leaving all the responsibility to school captain who would be the acting Principal & all XII standard girls would be various teachers. Some of the acting teachers would teach really better (much better than real ones- Oops!) & some others would merry around with jokes, singing & entertaining. The acting librarian would allow us to take n number of Mills & Boons, Cosmopolitan magazine and similar ones. That was so much fun!! I waited for my turn be this acting teacher in XII std, but never wanted to be a real teacher in life.

On the 1st Teachers' day in my medical school, we were lectured by one of the Professors that soon we will all be teachers & we shall be standing on this side of podium. I was so disheartened!!! Never in my thoughts, I wanted to be working as a teacher by profession. Thought I would be a great clinician one day, sitting in my clinic treating the patients.

The meaning of the word "DOCTOR" is a "Teacher- In Skilled profession". I understood that 'Doctors are one who doctors the doctrine'. A good clinician is always a "Teacher", he who keeps teaching patients, subordinates, colleagues & junior staff.

Call it a destiny or fate, I ended up being a lecturer of a medical school tutoring & guiding fresh mind students. Today, I stand on this side of podium, driving myself best to give better doctors for tomorrow. No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another. Becoming a teacher, I have realized the charm of gathering knowledge and the pleasure in its dissipation. Cheers to my teachers.. without them my world would have taken a stormy turn.

Happy Teachers' Day!!! To my great teachers includes my lovely parents too.

Hey,

Great to acknowledge an important aspect of every one's life.

Teacher!

One of the few words in vocab which has a deep and wide range of meaning in almost all the languages known on this earth. The foremost meaning being 'respect'. There were times when in school teachers were strict and students could not complain. If at all some student went home crying, parents would not entertain grievances. Parents on 'Parents day' would specifically meet teacher and would appreciate if the teacher was strict with their children. More strict the teacher, more diciplined the students. When i was a kid i remember this old marathi song, " Chadi lage cham cham, Vidhya yeaee gham gham" The translation in english means the more one takes cane beatings more knowledge one gets. Anyways changed are the days now. Today students have changed. General feeling which prevails... If teacher teaches s/he does for bread and butter, does it for pay check. Pay check a new additions now a days which was unknown to me when i was in school. One cannot reprimand students as we would get in our own days, as parents now have a different outlook. In most cases parents dont like their children to be dealt in a strict way.. for various reasons.. reasons for me unknown.
This perhaps in confined to a institution setup.

I have experienced a broader essense of teacher like many of us do once in a while. Teacher's are everywhere, a person walking on the street can teach, incidence can teach ,a small piece of play can teach, and experience itself can be the biggest teacher.
Once when commuting back to my residence in a taxi in Mumbai, as usual i initiated some conversation with the cabbie. An old fellow in late 70's, i wanted some conversation going as i wanted to kill the time and the etwrnal anxiety in my mind about day to day struggle. I said some thing to which this gentleman replied" Bhai saab, Zindagi mein saare din sarikhe nahin hote. Din badalte hain. Raat ke baad ujaala ataa hin hain. Ashaa pein zindagi tekke hain or chaltee rahegee"
Great thougts but did not want to beleive then, coz was doubting myself not his words. Never ever any one taght this to me in school.
But undoubtedly one of the biggest lessons of my life, coming from a taxi driver!

Back to institutions and schools. there was an era when Eklavya had to give his thumb to the teacher as Gurudakshina, when teachers were juxtaposed with parents in respect, when teacher evaluated students......
Now its the time for teachres to get evaluated by 18 year olds who have come to learn the subject in which teachers are Masters in!

Any takers?

i always considered teaching a dumbest job as I felt teachers did the parroting throughout the year. The same subject, same podium, same black board, same chairs, same tables.
But no longer I stand by my views. For, I know they cater to different faces, different minds, differnt brains. And that is what makes them different. Teaching is the most noble profession as every great mind in the woorld would have at one time honed or influenced by a teacher. So celebrate the spirit of being a teacher.
